Detailed Information
Zoloft (Sertraline) is in a class of drugs called selective serotonin
reuptake inhibitors. This medication is most commonly used to treat
depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic disorder, posttraumatic
stress disorder (PTSD), and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD).
How to take
- Do not take Zoloft within 2 weeks of taking any drug classified
as an MAO inhibitor( e.g. Marplan, Nardil, Parnate). When serotonin
boosters such as Zoloft are combined with MAO inhibitors, serious
and sometimes fatal reactions can occur. In addition, you should
not combine Zoloft with the drug pimozide (Orap).
- Take Zoloft exactly as prescribed: once a day, in either the
morning or the evening.
- Improvement with Zoloft may not be seen for several days to
a few weeks. You should expect to keep taking it for at least
several months.
Zoloft dosage
Major Depressive Disorder:
Initial dose: 50 mg per day. 25 mg per day may be used in pediatric
patients or adults experiencing significant side effects to the
50 mg perday dose.
Titrate up 25-50 mg per day at intervals no shorter than one week
until desired response is achieved. Use the lowest effective dose
for maintenance
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder:
Initial dose: 50 mg per day for adults, 25 mg per day for children
older than six years of age (no recommendations for children younger
than six).
Titrate up 25-50 mgper day at intervals no shorter than one week
until desired response is achieved.
Panic Disorder, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder::
Initial dose: 25 mg per day.
Titrate up to 50 mg per day after one week. Continue increasing
the dose by 50 mg per day if needed at intervals no shorter than
one week.
Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder:
Initial dose: 50 mg per day. Increase the dose by 50 mg per day
until effective. Dosing increases are generally performed with each
luteal phase of the mensutral cycle if needed.
Use the lowest effective dose (usually 100 mgper day).
Social Phobia:
Inital dose: 50 mg per day.
Titrate up to 50 mg per day after one week. Continue increasing
