Zithromax Detailed Information
Zithromax (Azithromycin) belongs to a new class of azalide macrolide
antibiotics. Macrolide antibiotics alter the chemical activity inside
the bacteria, preventing the production of proteins needed by the
bacteria to survive. This drug is used to treat many different types
of bacterial infections, such as bronchitis, pneumonia, tonsillitis,
skin infections, ear infections, and sexually transmitted diseases.
Zithromax Off-label uses:
- prophylactic agent for malaria [3]
- cat scratch fever
Zithromax Advantages:
- efficacious anti-infective agent for chlamydial persistent infection
[1]
- excellent bioavailability
- extremely long half-life
- less gastrointestinal upset than other macrolides, such as clarithromycin
(Biaxin) and erythromycin
- active against the organisms causing atypical pneumonias
Zithromax (Azithromycin) for Chlamydia
The recommended dose for the treatment of Chlamydia trachomatis
is a single 1 gram (1000 mg) dose.
Zithromax (Azithromycin) for acne
Acne vulgaris is a common inflammatory disorder of the skin. Oral
antibiotics are known to be effective in its treatment. A randomized,
investigator-blinded study was performed to compare the efficacy
of azithromycin with doxycycline. Statistically significant improvement
for the facial lesions were obtained with both drugs. Neither drug
was shown to be more effective than the other. The beneficial effect
continued until 2 months after treatment. This study indicates that
azithromycin is at least as effective as doxycycline in the treatment
of acne. [2]
Mode of action
Bacteria cause disease in two ways: they release toxins that harm
and kill body cells, and they provoke the immune system, leading
to inflammation, which can in itself be harmful. Common symptoms
of bacterial infection include: an elevated body temperature, sweating,
chills, confusion, increased pulse rate. Antibiotics are strong
medications that can stop some infections and save lives. Macrolides
[azithromycin (Zithromax), clarithromycin (Biaxin)] alter the chemical
activity inside the bacteria, preventing the production of proteins
needed by the bacteria to survive.
Antibiotics for Pneumonia treatment
Pneumonia sometimes presents after a cold, the flu, or any condition
that damages the defenses of the airways that would allow bacteria
to infect them. The symptoms of Pneumonia can vary and generally
overlap with other symptoms of the common cold or flu and sometimes
it is difficult to recognize pneumonia. Many people attribute it
to a cold that just won't go away. However, Pneumonia can be life-threatening
or even fatal if it is not properly treated. Treatment depends of
the organism responsible for the infection. If the cause is bacterial,
then the goal of treatment is to cure the infection with antibiotics.
If the infection is severe, if the person is having difficulty breathing,
or has other chronic medical conditions, then intravenous (IV-injected
into a vein) antibiotics may be needed and are usually administered
in a hospital. Drug classes used to treat Community Acquired Pneumonia:
Cephalosporins; Macrolides; Quinolones; Tetracyclines. Zithromax
is a macrolide antibiotic, that may be used to treat Pneumonia.
Macrolides alter the chemical activity inside the bacteria, preventing
the production of proteins needed by the bacteria to survive. Azithromycin
prevents protein production in bacteria. This allows the body to
get the infection under control.
Zithromax Z-Pack for Community-Acquired Pneumonia
The Zithromax Z-Pak delivers effective therapy for Community-Acquired
Pneumonia (CAP) in 5 days/5 doses. Dosage for adults and adolescents
16 years of age and older: 500 mg on the first day, then 250 mg
once a day on 4 days. Oral azithromycin should not be used in patients
with pneumonia who are judged to be inappropriate for oral therapy
because of moderate to severe illness or risk factors, such as:
cystic fibrosis, nosocomially acquired infections, or known or suspected
bacteremia; or in those who require hospitalization, are elderly
or debilitated, or have significant underlying health problems that
may compromise their ability to respond to their illness.
