Yasmin is a low-dose, monophasic oral contraceptive containing
ethinyl estradiol and drospirenone, a progestin analogue of spironolactone.
Yasmin is 99% effective, which is similar to other oral contraceptives.
If you think to buy Yasmin you might want to learn more about the pill.
Advantages
- Very effective - 99 percent chance of not getting pregnant.
- Due to its antiandrogenic diuretic properties, Yasmin has the
extra benefit of improving acne, seborrhea, and hirsutism (excess
body hair) as well as providing good weight stability - or even
slight weight loss - from decreased water retention.
- Does not interfere with having sex.
- May reduce menstrual cramps and make cycles more regular.
- Reversible contraception - the ability to become pregnant returns after stopping the pill.
Drawbacks
- You have to be careful to take the pill every day at the same time.
- Increased risk of blood clots.
- Diminished sex drive.
- Breast tenderness.
- Nausea (sometimes with vomiting).
- Not suitable for everyone.
How Yasmin differs from other Pills?
Yasmin is the only OC with the dual-property progestin - drospirenone.
Drospirenone is the only progestin that has anti-mineralocorticoid and anti-androgenic
properties. Drospirenone represents a unique class of progestins
with an entirely different molecular structure and activity than other currently available progestins.
Drospirenone is an analogue of spironolactone and, like spironolactone, affects the sodium and
water balance. While drospirenone increases sodium and water excretion, it does
not promote potassium deficiency.
Although Yasmin is not available over-the-counter, you can purchase the pills online.

Detailed Information
Yasmin (combination of drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol) is used
as contraception to prevent pregnancy. Yasmin prevents ovulation
(the release of an egg from an ovary) and also causes changes in
your cervical and uterine lining, making it harder for sperm to
reach the uterus and harder for a fertilized egg to attach to the uterus.
You should not buy and use Yasmin if you have the following conditions:
- A history of heart attack or stroke
- Blood clots in the legs (thrombophlebitis), lungs (pulmonary embolism), or eyes
- A history of blood clots in the deep veins of your legs
- Angina pectoris
- Known or suspected breast cancer or cancer of the lining of the uterus, cervix or vagina
- Unexplained vaginal bleeding (until a diagnosis is reached by your doctor)
- Yellowing of the whites of the eyes or of the skin (jaundice) during pregnancy or during previous use of the pill
- Known or suspected pregnancy
- Kidney or liver disease
How to take
- If you begin to take Yasmin during the first 24 hours of your
period, you do not need to use an extra form of birth control.
If you begin to take Yasmin on the Sunday after your period starts,
you will need to use an extra form of birth control for 7 days after you start taking Yasmin.
- Take Yasmin at the same time every day, not more than 2 hours apart.
- If you miss 1 dose of Yasmin, take it as soon as you remember.
Take your next dose at the regular time. This means you may take
2 doses on the same day. You do not need to use a backup form
of birth control if you only miss 1 pill. If you miss more than
1 dose, read the extra patient leaflet that comes with Yasmin
or ask your doctor for instructions. If you are
not sure how to handle missed doses, use an extra form of birth
control (e.g. condoms) until you talk with your doctor.
- Yasmin may increase the risk of stroke, heart attack, blood
clots, and high blood pressure. The risk is greater
if you smoke. Therefore do not smoke or use tobacco while taking Yasmin.
