Xenical (Orlistat) is an antiobesity agent that promotes weight loss by preventing

How does Xenical work?
In the intestine, an enzyme called lipase (produced primarily by
the pancreas) breaks apart fat in food so that it can be absorbed
into the body. Orlistat blocks lipases from breaking
down some of the fat you have eaten. The undigested fat cannot be
absorbed and is eliminated in bowel movements. Orlistat does not act on carbohydrates or protein.
By working this way, Xenical helps block about 30% of the fat eaten in food from being absorbed by the body. Weight loss
begins within 2 weeks and continues for 6 to 12 months.
Systemic absorption of orlistat is minor.
Alli vs Xenical
So what is the difference between Xenical vs Alli?
Both products have the same active ingredient - orlistat. Xenical® goes as 120 mg capsules manufactured by Roche.
Alli®, a lower strength of orlistat, is the over-the-counter version and goes as 60 mg capsules manufactured
by GlaxoSmithKline.
Precautions
- Do not take Xenical or Alli if you have malabsorption syndrome
(a condition that prevents nutrients from passing from your stomach
into your bloodstream) or cholestasis (a blockage in the
supply of bile needed for digestion).
- The main trouble with orlistat is a high rate of digestive side effects, such as oily stools,
diarrhea, abdominal cramps, faecal spotting, gas, fecal incontinence. These side effects may be intolerable for
some people. Side effects may be worse after a high-fat meal.
- Xenical blocks the absorption of the fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E and beta- carotene) and other fat-soluble
nutrients, and can lead to vitamin deficiency. Therefore, you should take a multivitamin supplements to ensure
the adequate intake of the vitamins. The multivitamin should be taken at least two hours before or several hours after
the Xenical.

Quick facts
