In the intestine, an enzyme called lipase (produced primarily by the pancreas) breaks apart fat in food so that it can be absorbed into the body. Orlistat blocks lipases from breaking down some of the fat you have eaten. The undigested fat cannot be absorbed and is eliminated in bowel movements. Xenical (orlistat) has no effect on carbohydrates or protein.

By working this way, Xenical helps block about 30% of the fat eaten in food from being absorbed by the body.

Xenical blocks the absorption of the fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E and beta- carotene) and other fat-soluble nutrients, and can lead to vitamin deficiency.
