Brand Names: Wellbutrin, Wellbutrin SR, Wellbutrin XL, Zyban SR
Generic Name: Bupropion
The following product information is not a substitute for physician's
or manufacturer's instructions.
Wellbutrin uses:
This medication is used to treat depression. Wellbutrin regulates certain
brain chemicals--dopamine and norepinephrine--to elevate mood. It is believed
that depression is caused by chemical imbalances in the brain. Controlling
these chemical imbalances will help improve depressive symptoms. Wellbutrin
is also used to help people quit smoking.
Contraindications:
Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to any ingredient in this
medicine, you have seizures, you are taking any other medication containing
Wellbutrin, you have or have a history of an eating disorder, such as
anorexia or bulimia or you are currently taking or have taken a monoamine
oxidase (MAO) inhibitor within the last 14 days.
How to use Wellbutrin:
Take Wellbutrin exactly as prescribed by your doctor. If you have any
questions about the amount or frequency of the medicine you are taking,
consult with your health care provider. It is usually taken one to three
times a day and may be taken with or without food. Since Wellbutrin may
cause sleeplessness, avoid taking this medicine close to bedtime. Wellbutrin
can be habit forming. Never take a larger dose, take it more often, or
for a longer period than prescribed. Maximum doses of Wellbutrin are as
follows: no single dose of the regular-release product Wellbutrin should
be more than 150 mg, and doses should be taken at least 6 hours apart
with a maximum daily dose of 450 mg; single doses of the sustained-release
product Wellbutrin SR should not exceed 200 mg and should be taken at
least 8 hours apart with a maximum daily dose of 400 mg. Continue to take
the medicine even if you feel better. Do not stop taking Wellbutrin without
notifying your doctor. Wellbutrin must be taken regularly for a few weeks
before its full effect is felt.
Wellbutrin possible side effects:
Every medicine may cause side effects. Wellbutrin is generally well tolerated.
Notify your doctor if any of the following side effects from Wellbutrin
are severe or do not go away: dry mouth, headache, increased sweating,
nausea, vomiting, constipation, anxiety, insomnia, trouble sleeping, frequent
urination, difficulty urinating, fatigue and blurred vision, change in
appetite or weight. If you experience any of the following uncommon but
serious symptoms, call your doctor immediately: allergic reaction (difficulty
breathing, rash, itching), seizures or tremors, fast or irregular heartbeat,
loss of coordination, dizziness, fainting, mood changes, slowed movements,
yellowing of the eyes or skin. If you notice other side effects not listed
here, contact your doctor.
Wellbutrin precautions:
Before using Wellbutrin, tell your doctor if you are taking any prescription
or nonprescription medicine (anticoagulants, antihistamines, antipsychotics,
carbamazepine, insulin, levodopa, lithium, MAO inhibitors, medication
for high blood pressure, seizures or allergies, methylphenidate, oral
antidiabetic medications, tranquilizers). Tell your doctor if you have
a history of seizures; of head trauma. Tell your doctor if you have liver
disease, impaired kidney function, diabetes. Tell your doctor if you consume
large amounts of alcohol or have a history of substance abuse. Tell your
doctor if you are using nicotine patches. Tell your doctor if you are
pregnant or breastfeeding. Wellbutrin may cause seizures when taken in
large doses. Because of the risk of seizures, do not use this medication
in combination with any other drug containing Wellbutrin. If a seizure
occurs while taking this medicine, stop using Wellbutrin and contact your
doctor immediately. You should know that this medicine may cause dizziness,
drowsiness and may affect coordination, so use caution while driving or
performing other tasks requiring alertness or physical dexterity. Remember
that alcohol can increase the risk of seizures and add to the drowsiness
caused by this medication. Limit or avoid consumption of alcoholic beverages
while taking Wellbutrin. Elderly patients may be more sensitive to the
effects of Wellbutrin. Stop taking MAO inhibitors at least 14 days before
taking Wellbutrin.
Wellbutrin drug interactions:
The best way to avoid harmful interactions is to tell your doctor or pharmacist
what nonprescription and prescription medications you are currently taking.
Many drugs can interact with Wellbutrin, resulting in side effects or
decreased effectiveness of the medicine. Excess caffeine intake can increase
the chance of seizures with Wellbutrin. Check all nonprescription/prescription
drug labels for caffeine. Do not start or stop any medication without
doctor approval.
Overdose:
Contact your doctor or pharmacist immediately. Symptoms of overdose may
include seizures, hallucinations, rapid heart rate, and loss of consciousness.
Missed dose:
Take any missed dose as soon as possible but not if it is within 4 hours
of the next dose. If it is time for the next dose, skip the missed dose
and resume your regular schedule. Do not "double-up" the dose. If more
than one dose is missed, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
Notes:
Do not stop taking bupropion without first talking to your doctor. It
may be several weeks before you begin to feel better, and you may require
continuous treatment for quite some time. Talk to your doctor about alcohol
use before starting treatment with bupropion. Do not crush, chew, or break
the sustained-release tablets (Wellbutrin SR and Zyban). Swallow them
whole. They are specially formulated to release slowly in your body. If
you are unsure whether you have a sustained-release formulation, ask your
pharmacist, doctor, or nurse.
