Ultram Detailed Information
Ultram is is a non-scheduled, centrally acting synthetic opioid
analgesic intended for treatment of moderate to moderately severe
pain. This drug helps your body's system relieve pain in two important
ways. First, Ultram acts directly on parts of the brain and spinal
cord to reduce the amount of pain. Second, it reduces the size of
the pain signal passed from one nerve to another. Ultram works differently
from an NSAID (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug), such as Ibuprofen.
This medication is also different from codeine or morphine. At least
two complementary mechanisms appear applicable: binding of parent
and M1 metabolite to opioid receptors and weak inhibition of the
re-uptake of norephinephrine and serotonin.
It has been used in post-surgical pain, obstetric pain, and chronic
pain of mechanical and neurogenic origin.
Ultram as pain reliever
Pain is an unpleasant experience primarily associated with some
kind of tissue damage. Pain is your body's way of warning your brain
that something might be wrong. Acute pain is usually immediate and
lasts less than two weeks. This type of pain is a normal response
to an injury, but if it is untreated it can cause significant emotional
or physical problems. Chronic pain persists over the long term,
usually for more than three months. This type of pain can be a sign
of a serious illness. It is very important to treat chronic pain.
It is not a normal state and no one should have to live with constant
pain. The dosage and the length of time you take medication depend
on the medical problem for which you are taking Ultram. Take this
drug only as prescribed. For adults: one-half to two 50 mg tablets
every four to six hours as needed. Don't take more than 8 tablets
in a day.
Interesting Ultram facts
- Ultram is a non-scheduled centrally-acting synthetic opioid
analgesic that has been used in the treatment of moderate to moderately
severe pain since its introduction in the United States in 1995.
- Ultram is rapidly and almost completely absorbed, with an onset
of action occurring within 1 hour of oral administration.
- Compared with narcotics, Ultram does not induce significant
respiratory depression, constipation, or have significant abuse
potential.
- Its mode of action and safety profile distinguishes it from
other opioids. Unlike other centrally acting analgesics, Ultram
exerts a dual action by binding to the opioid receptor site in
the central nervous system and by weakly inhibiting the reuptake
of biogenic amines.
