Detailed Information
Tramadol is a synthetic, centrally-acting analgesic used for the
treatment of moderate to severe pain. In 1998, tramadol became the
most used centrally-acting analgesic worldwide, outselling morphine
in dollars turned over. The success of tramadol is mainly a result
of its favourable side effect profile, which differs significantly
from that of other opioids.
Tramadol has a dose-dependent efficacy that lies between that of
codeine and morphine. It is safe and effective pain reliever in
a broad range of painful conditions, both acute and chronic.
How to take
- You may take the medication with or without food.
- Do not take more than 300 mg of tramadol in one day.
- Tramadol may cause drowsiness and dizziness. These effects may
be worse if you take it with alcohol or certain medicines. Do
not drive or perform other possibly unsafe tasks until you know
how you react to it.
- Tramadol should not be used in CHILDREN younger than 16 years
old.
- When used for long periods of time or at high doses, Tramadol
may not work as well and may require higher doses to obtain the
same effect as when originally taken. This is known as TOLERANCE.
- Tramadol may be habit-forming. Some people who use Tramadol
for a long time without a break may develop a physical need to
continue taking it. This is known as physical DEPENDENCE.
- Seizures (convulsions) have occurred in some people taking tramadol.
You may be more likely to have a seizure while taking tramadol
if you have a history of seizures or head injury, a metabolic
disorder, or if you are taking certain medicines such as antidepressants,
muscle relaxers, or medicine for nausea and vomiting.
- Safety and effectiveness in children under 16 years of age have
not been established.
Tramadol dosage
The usual starting dose for chronic pain is 25 mg once a day in
the morning. The daily dosage is then increased every 3 days until
it reaches 200 mg taken in four doses of 50 mg each. After the phase-in
period, Tramadol may be taken in doses of 50 to 100 mg every 4 to
6 hours, depending on the severity of pain.
If rapid pain relief is needed, the phase-in steps can be skipped,
though side effects will be more likely. The maximum dosage under
any circumstances is 400 mg a day (300 mg for those over age 75).
For people with kidney problems, the usual starting dose is 50
to 100 mg every 12 hours; and the maximum per day is 200 mg. For
those with cirrhosis, the usual dose is 50 mg every 12 hours.

opioid receptors and inhibits noradrenaline and serotonin uptake.
- Tramadol is available over-the-counter without prescription
in a few countries.
- Although human clinical studies are lacking, there is a great
deal of anecdotal evidence that Tramadol may be effective as an
adjunct treatment for depression and for anxiety disorders like
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD).
- Tramadol is a non-scheduled centrally-acting synthetic opioid
analgesic that has been used in the treatment of moderate to moderately
severe pain since its introduction in the United States in 1995.
- This drug is rapidly and almost completely absorbed, with an
onset of action occurring within 1 hour of oral administration.
- Compared with narcotics, Tramadol does not induce significant
respiratory depression, constipation, or have significant abuse
potential.
- It remains in the body for a shorter time than some of the other
opioids and can be used in people with other medical conditions
such as high blood pressure, heart failure or kidney problems.
