More Information
What are the benefits? Tetracycline is effective against a broad range of bacterial pathogens. It causes few side effects and is generally well tolerated. When it comes to cost, it is one of the oldest antibiotics and therefore very inexpensive. What are the drawbacks? Tetracycline should not be used during the last half of pregnancy or in children under the age of 8. It may damage developing teeth and cause permanent discoloration. May cause photosensitivity (sensitivity to sunlight). Avoid unnecessary exposure to sunlight or tanning lamps, use sunscreens, and wear protective clothing to avoid photosensitivity reactions. Often causes gastrointestinal side effects. Partially inactivated by antacids and calcium. Take 2 h before or after antacids containing aluminum, calcium, or magnesium, preparations containing iron or zinc, and other dairy products. How does Tetracycline work? Tetracycline interferes with bacterial protein synthesis. It is bacteriostatic and has broad spectrum of action. It blocks the binding to aminoacyl transfer RNA to messenger RNA. It has some immunomodulatory actions and is anti-inflammatory affecting the lymphocyte function, as well as neutrophil chemotaxis. It inhibits lipase and collagenase. Dosage It is recommended to take Tetracycline without food and dairy products, because food may decrease its absorption. To reduce the risk of esophageal irritation or ulceration take prescribed dose with a full glass of water. Always check your Tetracycline prescription for the correct dosage. The doctor may adjust your dose on the basis of your condition, age, and risk factors such as kidney problems. For most infections, the usual daily dose is 1 to 2 grams divided into 2 or 4 equal doses, depending on severity. You should use Tetracycline for at least 24 to 48 hours after symptoms and fever have subsided. For a streptococcal infection, doses should be taken for at least 10 days. Brucellosis: The usual dose is 500 mg 4 times daily for 3 weeks (accompanied by streptomycin). Syphilis: You should take a total of 30 to 40 grams, divided into equal doses over a period of 10 to 15 days. Gonorrhea: Starting dose is 1.5 grams, followed by 0.5 gram every 6 hours for 4 days, to a total dosage of 9 grams. For children 8 years of age and older the usual daily dose is 10 to 20 mg per pound divided into 2 or 4 equal doses. |
