Tretinoin (Retin-A, Renova) is a prescription topical retinoid. It is used to decrease the number and severity of
acne pimples and promote quick healing of acne. Tretinoin helps the skin to renew itself more quickly and therefore
improves the appearance and texture of skin.
Tretinoin can noticeably improve, or even erase, fine to medium-depth wrinkles and diminish pigmentation. Tretinoin
cream or gel also helps to reduce the appearance of stretch marks by increasing collagen production in the dermis.

More Information
Tretinoin rejuvenates skin by promoting cell division and turnover, and formation of new collagen.
Numerous clinical studies have proven tretinoin to treat acne and reduce signs
of photoaging including dark spots, fine lines, and surface
roughness. The results of tretinoin treatment without a consistent
skin care, such as protection from sun exposure, are markedly less dramatic.
Retin-A Micro is a tretinoin formulated to lessen the irritation without affecting the efficacy. The
microspheres hold the medication in reserve, allowing the skin to absorb small amounts over time.
How to use
What is important to know when you receive Retin-A or Tretinoin prescription:
- Photosensitivity. Tretinoin sensitizes the skin to the sun and may cause you to become sunburned more easily.
It stimulates the skin to shed and you will lose some of that dead outer layer which protects you from ultraviolet
radiation. Use a sunscreen (SPF at least 30) or wear protective clothing if you must be outside.
- Skin irritation. Retin-A (Tretinoin) can increase skin sensitivity to
weather extremes of wind or cold. About 50% of users experience some skin irritation.
- Remove all cosmetics with a mild soap before applying topical retinoid.
Gently dry the area. Wait 20 to 30 minutes to make sure that your skin is completely dry.
- During the first 3 weeks of application, your acne may seem to get worse before
it gets better. It may take longer than 12 weeks before you notice
full improvement of your acne, even with everyday use.
- Retin-A is a suitable long-term acne treatment as it provides needed benefits without inducing bacterial resistance.
- Because tretinoin is degraded by sunlight, it should always be used at night.
If used over a period of years, tretinoin will continue to reverse aging of the
skin and can continue improve the skin's appearance even several years after starting the treatment.
