Detailed Information
Paroxetine HCL is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI),
with antidepressant and anxiolytic activity. Paroxetine is approved
by the FDA for treatment of depression and for the following anxiety
disorders: obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic disorder, generalized
anxiety disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, and social anxiety
disorder.
With continued treatment, Paxil can help restore the balance of
serotonin (a naturally occurring brain chemical), which helps reduce
the symptoms of anxiety and depression. Depression, GAD, social
anxiety disorder, panic disorder, OCD and PTSD can occur separately.
This medication works by increasing the amount of serotonin, a natural
substance in the brain that helps maintain mental balance.
How to take
- Do not use Paroxetine if you are taking pimozide (Orap), thioridazine
(Mellaril), or an MAO inhibitor such as isocarboxazid (Marplan),
tranylcypromine (Parnate), phenelzine (Nardil), rasagiline (Azilect),
or selegiline (Eldepryl, Emsam). Serious and sometimes fatal reactions
can occur when these medicines are taken with paroxetine. You
must wait at least 14 days after stopping an MAO inhibitor before
you can take paroxetine. After you stop taking paroxetine, you
must wait at least 14 days before you start taking an MAOI.
- Paroxetine should be used cautiously by people with a history
of manic disorders and those with high pressure in the eyes (glaucoma).
- Do not stop taking this medication suddenly. It can lead to
symptoms such as dizziness, abnormal dreams, and tingling sensations.
To prevent such problems, the dose should be reduced gradually.
- is taken once a day, with or without food, usually in the morning.

professional can make suggestions about the best time of day for
you. The usual starting dose is 10 mg to 20 mg, once a day, depending
on your condition. Because individual conditions can vary, your
health care professional may start you on a low dose and raise it

The recommended initial dose for people age 65 and older is 10 mg
a day.
