Detailed Information
Oxcarbazepine (Trileptal) is in a group of drugs called anticonvulsants,
or antiepileptic drugs. It is used as a monotherapy or adjunctive
therapy in the treatment of partial seizures in adults and children
of 4 years of age and older with epilepsy; adjunctive therapy in
the treatment of partial seizures in children of 2 years of age
and older with epilepsy.
How to take
- Take Trileptal with or without food.
- It is important to take all doses on time to keep the level
of medicine in your blood constant. Take doses at evenly spaced
intervals. Do not skip doses.
- Do not stop taking the medication even if you feel better. It
is important to take oxcarbazepine regularly to prevent seizures
from recurring.
- Do not suddenly stop taking Trileptal. Trileptal must be gradually
decreased when discontinued.
- Do not take this medication if you are allergic to oxcarbazepine
or to a similar medicine called carbamazepine (Carbatrol, Tegretol).
A significant number (25 to 30 percent) of people who are sensitive
to carbamazepine (Tegretol) also experience sensitivity to Trileptal.
- Trileptal can lead to a loss of sodium from the blood, resulting
in a serious medical condition, which can cause a life-threatening
electrolyte imbalance. Your doctor should carefully monitor your
blood sodium levels during treatment with Trileptal.
- FDA pregnancy category D. This medication can cause harm to
an unborn baby.
- Trileptal may cause dizziness, drowsiness, changes in vision,
or difficulty with coordination. These effects may be worse if
you take it with alcohol or certain medicines. Use Trileptal with
caution.
Trileptal dosage
ADULTS
Trileptal taken alone
The usual starting dose is 300 mg twice daily. Your doctor may gradually
increase the dose to 600 mg twice daily. In people with kidney disorders,
the starting dose is 150 mg twice daily.
When changing from another antiepileptic medication to Trileptal
The usual starting dose is 300 mg twice daily. Your doctor will
gradually increase the dose over a period of 2 to 4 weeks, while
reducing the other medication over a period of 3 to 6 weeks. The
final dosage of Trileptal is typically 1,200 mg twice daily.
Trileptal combined with another antiepileptic medication
The usual starting dose is 300 mg twice daily. Your doctor may increase
the dose to 600 mg twice daily.
CHILDREN 4 TO 16 YEARS OLD
For children the dosage of Trileptal is based on body weight.
Trileptal taken alone
Your child's doctor will gradually increase the dose every 3 days
until the most effective dose is reached. The usual dose ranges
from 300 to 1,050 mg taken twice daily.
When changing from another antiepileptic medication to Trileptal
Your child's doctor will gradually increase the dose of Trileptal
while reducing the other medication over a period of 3 to 6 weeks.
The doctor will increase the dose of Trileptal weekly until the
most effective dose is reached. The usual dose ranges from 300 to
1,050 mg taken twice daily.
Trileptal combined with another antiepileptic medication
After a 2-week buildup, the dosage typically ranges from 450 to
900 mg taken twice daily.
