Skelaxin (Metaxalone)Description Metaxalone, an oxazolidinone derivative, is a skeletal muscle relaxant. Metaxalone is manufactured by King Pharmaceuticals and is sold only as brand name Skelaxin. It comes in an 800 mg scored tablet. The previous 400 mg strength has been discontinued. Skelaxin is used, along with rest and physical therapy, to relax muscles and relieve pain and discomfort caused by strains, sprains, and other muscle injuries. Skelaxin is indicatred for acute painful conditions, for short-term use, generally about 3 weeks. However, it is unsuitable for skeletal muscle hyperactivity secondary to chronic neurologic disorders, such as cerebral palsy, and other dyskinesias. Comparison to other muscle relaxants The primary advantages of Skelaxin over other muscle relaxants include lack of abuse and dependence potential, reduced sedation and drowsiness. In fact, Skelaxin appears to be the safest and has the fewest rate of reported side effects of any skeletal muscle relaxants. Metaxalone does not interfere with the motor activity involved in maintaining balance and posture. How does Skelaxin work? Metaxalone works by blocking nerve impulses (or pain sensations) that are sent to your brain. Its muscle relaxing effects are probably related to its sedative effect. Metaxalone does not directly relax muscles and does not depress neuronal conduction, neuromuscular transmission, or muscle excitability. How to take The recommended dose for adults and children over 12 years of age is 800 mg three to four times a day. Significant improvement in muscle spasm, range of motion, and interference with daily activities often occurs at 48 hours.
