Prednisolone (Millipred, Orapred)

Prednisolone (prednisone) is a prescription corticosteroid used to reduce inflammation and alleviate symptoms in a variety of disorders. It is a potent immunosuppressant and, among other, anti-inflammatory medication with rapid onset of action. It can be a life saver for many people.

Prednisolone is used to treat many inflammatory and allergic conditions, including arthritis - rheumatoid, psoriatic; systemic lupus; ulcerative colitis; bronchial asthma; symptomatic sarcoidosis; allergic rhinitis; dermatitis; severe psoriasis. Prednisolone is also used in patients whose adrenal glands are unable to produce sufficient amounts of corticosteroids.

Prednisone vs Prednisolone: What is the difference?

While prednisone and prednisolone have the same indications, are equally effective, and are considered to be equivalent, they should not be confused. Prednisone is an inactive precursor and must be converted by the liver into prednisolone. For this reason, prednisolone is a preferred prescription choice for people with liver diseases.

How to take

  • Take Prednisone (prednisolone) with food to avoid stomach upset.
  • Take it exactly as prescribed and try to keep dosages to an absolute minimum.
  • If you have been taking prednisone for a period of time, you will probably need an increased dosage before, during, and after any stressful situation. Always consult your doctor if you are expecting stress and think you may need a temporary dosage increase.
  • When stopping prednisone, tapering off is better than quitting abruptly. Generally, it is not recommended to stop corticosteroid prescription without doctor's advice.

  • Do not get a smallpox vaccination or any other immunization while you are taking prednisone.
  • Diseases such as chickenpox or measles can be very serious or even fatal in both children and adults who are taking the steroid. Try to avoid exposure to these diseases.

Prednisone (prednisolone) dosage

Dosage is determined by the condition being treated and your response. Typical starting doses can range from 5 mg to 60 mg a day. Once you respond, the dose can be gradually lowered to the minimum effective amount. To treat the acute attacks of multiple sclerosis, doses of as much as 200 mg per day may be given for a week, followed by 80 mg every other day for a month.

Quick facts

Prednisone
  • Prednisolone influences the biochemical behaviour of most tissues of the body.
  • When prednisone is compared with the naturally occurring glucocorticoids, cortisone and cortisol (hydrocortisone), its anti-inflammatory effects are 5 times more potent whilst its mineralocorticoid properties are less pronounced.
