Naproxen is in a class of drugs called nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). This drug is used to reduce pain, inflammation, and stiffness caused by many conditions, such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, gout, ankylosing spondylitis, injury, abdominal cramps associated with menstruation, tendinitis, and bursitis.

How to take

  • Naproxen may be taken with food or an antacid, and with a full glass of water to avoid stomach upset.
  • Use naproxen with caution if you have kidney or liver disease. It can cause liver or kidney problems in some people.
  • This drug can increase water retention. It will be prescribed with caution if you have heart disease or high blood pressure.
  • PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: Naproxen may harm the fetus. Do not use it during the last 3 months of pregnancy.
  • Do NOT use naproxen if you have recently had or will be having bypass heart surgery.

Naproxen dosage

Rheumatoid Arthritis, Osteoarthritis, and Ankylosing Spondylitis:
The usual dose of naproxen is 250 mg, 375 mg, or 500 mg 2 times a day (morning and evening). Your dose may be adjusted by your doctor over your period of treatment. Improvement of symptoms should be seen in 2 to 4 weeks.

Acute Gout:
Starting dose of naproxen is 750 mg, followed by 250 mg every 8 hours until the symptoms are relieved.

Mild to Moderate Pain, Menstrual Cramps, Acute Tendinitis, and Bursitis:
Starting dose is 500 mg, followed by 250 mg every 6 to 8 hours as needed. The most you should take in a day is 1,250 mg.

Juvenile Arthritis:
The usual daily dose is 10 mg per 2.2 pounds of body weight, divided into 2 doses. Follow your doctor's directions carefully when giving a child this medicine. The safety and effectiveness of naproxen have not been established in children under 2 years of age.

Older Adults:
Your doctor will probably have you take a reduced dose.
