Minocycline Without Prescription

  • Generic name: Minocycline
  • Brand names: Dynacin, Minocin
  • Drug class: Tetracycline antibiotic

Minocycline is a tetracycline antibiotic. It is widely prescribed to treat acne. Minocycline is used to treat many types of infections, including respiratory tract infections (pneumonia, bronchitis), urinary tract infections, skin infections, sexually transmitted diseases, and anthrax.

Before you buy Minocycline it is wise to discuss with your doctor the benefits and the possible risks.

Minocycline Benefits

  • Very effective antibiotic. It penetrates most body tissues and fluids and achieves high concentrations. The concentration in tissues is generally 2 to 4 times higher with minocycline than with tetracycline.
  • Convenient once- or twice-daily dosage regimen due to its long half-life (about 11-22 hours).
  • Neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory properties.
  • Active against about 87% of tetracycline resistant staphylococci, and against many strains of staphylococci resistant to penicillins.
  • Has lower risk for bacterial resistance over time.

Minocycline Disadvantages

  • The main disadvantage of minocycline is its rare but serious side effects. In very rare cases long-term treatment (over two years) may cause serious side effects such as autoimmune hepatitis, lupus-like syndrome, serum-sickness like reaction (delayed allergic reaction).
  • May cause blue-black pigmentation of gums, skin, and nails.
  • The most frequent side effects are dizziness, nausea, vomiting, and vertigo.
  • More expensive than other tetracyclines.

If you prefer antibiotic without such rare but possible risks, doxycycline would be a better choice. Many medical experts believe that both prescription antibiotics are equally effective for acne. Their antimicrobial spectrum is very similar except for one important aspect: minocycline has better antistaphylococcal activity.

Drug Information

Minocycline for acne

Minocycline has a long history of use in treating acne. This antibiotic is most commonly used in the treatment of moderate to severe acne vulgaris, and is particularly useful for pustular type acne. However, this antibiotic is generally reserved for people who do not respond to or cannot use other treatments.

In some clinical studies Minocycline was found to be more effective than other tetracyclines against inflammatory lesions in mild to moderate acne.

Minocycline dosage regimen for acne vulgaris:

  • 50 mg once or twice daily; or
  • 100 mg once or twice daily

How to take

  • Do not take minocycline if you have history of allergic reaction to it or to any other tetracycline antibiotic.
  • Minocycline works best when there is a constant amount of antibiotic in the body. To help keep the drug level constant, take the doses at evenly spaced times.
  • Avoid use of antacids that contain aluminum, calcium, or magnesium, and iron preparations. If you must take these medicines, take them 2 to 3 hours before or after taking minocycline.

Dosage

All tetracyclines can cause discoloration of developing teeth and are contraindicated in pregnant women and children younger than 8 years old.

Before you request Minocycline without having a prescription, you should talk with your doctor and find out if the drug is suitable for your condition. For certain bacterial infections other antibiotics are preferred.

If minocycline is contraindicated and you need different prescription treatment, you may consider azithromycin, which like tetracyclines has anti-inflammatory properties.

You may take minocycline without dietary restrictions. While the absorption of the drug is decreased with milk and dairy products, it is not as significant as the decrease with other tetracyclines.

The usual dosage of minocycline is 200 mg initially, followed by 100 mg every 12 hours. If you need to take more frequent doses, your doctor may prescribe two or four 50 mg capsules initially, and then one 50 mg capsule 4 times daily. The dosage and the length of treatment can vary according to your condition and infection.

Minocycline is not a best choice for the treatment of any "staph" infection.

Quick facts

Minocycline
  • Minocycline is a second-generation, long-acting tetracycline that was first introduced in 1967.
  • It is the most lipid soluble of all the tetracyclines. The importance of this property is that minocycline has particularly good penetration into lipid-rich tissues such as pilosebaceous unit.
