Metronidazole is a prescription antibacterial and antiprotozoal medication. It is especially effective against anaerobic infections (infections that grow without the presence of oxygen) and protozoa such as Trichomonas vaginalis, amebiasis, and giardiasis.

Metronidazole has anti-inflammatory properties in the large intestine and is useful in treating Crohn's disease, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and rosacea. It does not kill Lactobacillus species ("good bacteria").

Trichomoniasis

Trichomonas vaginalis was discovered in 1836 and has been known to cause vaginitis since 1916. However, there was no effective cure until the discovery of metronidazole in 1957 by French scientists Durel, Roiron, Siboulet, and Borel.

One-day regimen: 2 g taken as a single dose.
Seven-day regimen: 500 mg twice daily for 7 days.

Metronidazole has a cure rate of 90-95% in eradication of Trichomonas vaginalis.

Amebiasis (Acute amebic dysentery, Amebic liver abscess)

For adults: 500-750 mg 3 times daily for 5 to 10 days.
For children: 35-50 mg/kg given in 3 divided doses daily for 10 days.

Anaerobic Bacterial Infections

Metronidazole is bactericidal and extremely active against anaerobic bacteria. The usual adult dosage is 500 mg every 6 hours for 7 to 10 days.

Bacterial vaginosis

Bacterial vaginosis (also known as Gardnerella vaginitis) is the most common cause of vaginal discharge. Also, it is associated with pelvic inflammatory disease.

Metronidazole 500 mg twice daily for seven days works good to return the vaginal flora to normal. The cure rate is from 84 to 96 percent.
