Metronidazole Detailed Information
Metronidazole is an oral synthetic antiprotozoal and antibacterial
agent. Metronidazole is especially effective against anaerobic infections
(infections that grow without the presence of oxygen.). It has anti-inflammatory
properties in the large intestine and is a very effective anti-diarrhea
medication.
Metronidazole is indicated for the treatment of protozoal infections:
- Trichomoniasis - symptomatic, asymptomatic, asymptomatic consorts
- Amebiasis - acute intestinal amebiasis (amebic dysentery) and
amebic liver abscess
- Giardiasis - parasitic gut infection caused by the protozoa
Giardia lamblia
Metronidazole is indicated in the treatment of the following serious
infections caused by susceptible anaerobic bacteria:
- Intra-abdominal infections, including peritonitis, intra-abdominal
abscess, and liver abscess
- Skin and skin structure infections
- Endometritis, endomyometritis, tubo-ovarian abscess, and postsurgical
vaginal cuff infection
- Bacterial septicemia
- Bone and joint infections as adjunctive therapy
- Central nervous system (CNS) infections, including meningitis
and brain abscess
- Endocarditis
- Necrotising pneumonia
