Drug Information

The dangers of Levaquin

Levofloxacin carries a risk of tendon disorders such as tendinitis, arthropathies, and tendon rupture. Tendon damage can occur during treatment or the first several months after finishing the medication. Factors that can increase the risk of side effects include concurrent use of corticosteroids (steroid drugs), being older than 60 years.

Stop taking Levaquin, avoid exercise, and contact your doctor promptly if you develop pain, inflammation, or a discomfort in a tendon or muscles.

Fluoroquinolone antibiotics may cause bone and joint development problems in children and teenagers. Therefore infants, children, teenagers, pregnant or breastfeeding women should not take Levofloxacin unless the medication is prescribed by a doctor.

The most common side effects are mild diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, dizziness, nervousness, and headache.

The benefits of Levaquin

Levofloxacin is a bactericidal and is highly effective against gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria.

Levaquin is sometimes called "respiratory quinolone". It is very effective against atypical respiratory pathogens (Legionella pneumophila, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, Chlamydia pneumoniae) and resistant pneumococci.

Lower potential for resistance problems than with older quinolones.

Levofloxacin is nearly 100% bioavailable, therefore oral and intravenous formulations may be considered interchangeable.

How to take

  • Stop taking the medicine immediately and call your doctor if you have pain or inflammation in tendon areas.
  • Take the entire prescription course of medicine to make sure the infection is cleared up completely. Do not stop the treatment just because symptoms begin to improve. The infection may re-occur if the drug is stopped too soon.
  • Antibiotic works best when constant levels of the medication are maintained in the blood. To help keep levels constant, take the medicine at the same time each day.
  • Drinking extra fluids while you are taking this drug is recommended to help prevent some side effects.
  • Avoid taking antacids that contain aluminum, calcium, or magnesium at the same time as Levofloxacin. The antacids may reduce the effectiveness of antibiotic.
  • Fluoroquinolones may interact with other medications and supplements.
  • Diabetes patients: Levofloxacin may affect your blood sugar. Check blood sugar levels closely.
