Detailed Information
Lasix (Furosemide) is a very powerful loop diuretic (water pill).
Furosemide treats fluid retention (edema) in people with congestive
heart failure, liver disease, or a kidney disorder such as nephrotic
syndrome. This medication is also used to treat high blood pressure
(hypertension).
How to take
- Furosemide will make you urinate more often and you may get
dehydrated easily. Follow your doctor's instructions about the
type and amount of liquids you should drink while you are taking
furosemide.
- Lasix may cause dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting; alcohol,
hot weather, exercise, or fever may increase these effects. To
prevent them, sit up or stand slowly, especially in the morning.
Sit or lie down at the first sign of any of these effects.
Lasix (Furosemide) dosage:
ADULTS
Fluid Retention
You will probably be started at a single dose of 20 to 80 mg. If
needed, the same dose can be repeated 6 to 8 hours later, or the
dose may be increased. Your doctor may raise the dosage by 20 mg
or 40 mg with each successive administration - each 6 to 8 hours
after the previous dose - until the desired effect is achieved.
This dosage is then taken once or twice daily thereafter. Your doctor
should monitor you carefully using laboratory tests. The maximum
daily dose is 600 mg.
High Blood Pressure
The usual starting dose is 80 mg per day divided into 2 doses. Your
doctor will adjust the dosages and may add other high blood pressure
medications if Lasix is not enough.
CHILDREN
The usual initial dose is 2 mg per 2.2 pounds of body weight given
in a single oral dose. The doctor may increase subsequent doses
by 1 to 2 mg per 2.2 pounds. Doses are spaced 6 to 8 hours apart.
A child's dosage will be adjusted to the lowest needed to achieve
maximum effect, and should not exceed 6 mg per 2.2 pounds.
