Lexapro vs. Zoloft

A high quality stady3 compared the efficacy and tolerability of Lexapro (escitalopram) 10 mg/day with Zoloft (sertraline) dosed within its recommended dose range (50-200 mg/day) for the treatment of depression. How long it takes for Lexapro to start working

The standard line with SSRIs is that if you don't feel any positive benefit after six weeks, then you should talk to your doctor about another medicine.

Many people treated with Lexapro begin to feel better within 1 or 2 weeks, although the full effect may take 4 to 6 weeks. It tends to work faster than other SSRIs. For most people, it may take as long as 3-4 weeks to experience the optimal effects of the medication.

The duration of treatment depends on the individual's personal psychiatric history and family history. For instance, the length of medication treatment will be longer for those who have had two or more previous episodes of depression. For most people, Lexapro may be tapered 6 months after their depression responds to treatment.
