Drug Information

Lexapro vs. Zoloft

A high quality stady3 compared the efficacy and tolerability of Lexapro (escitalopram) 10 mg/day with Zoloft (sertraline) dosed within its recommended dose range (50-200 mg/day) for the treatment of depression. Both medication where equally effective. At these doses, both escitalopram and sertraline were generally well tolerated.

How long it takes for Lexapro to start working

The standard line with SSRIs is that if you don't feel any positive benefit after six weeks, then you should talk to your doctor about another medicine.

Many people treated with Lexapro begin to feel better within 1 or 2 weeks, although the full effect may take 4 to 6 weeks. It tends to work faster than other SSRIs. For most people, it may take as long as 3-4 weeks to experience the optimal effects of the medication.

The duration of treatment depends on the individual's personal psychiatric history and family history. For instance, the length of medication treatment will be longer for those who have had two or more previous episodes of depression. For most people, Lexapro may be tapered 6 months after their depression responds to treatment. However, a small percentage of patients will continue to have depressive symptoms after their antidepressant is reduced or stopped. These persons may benefit from continuing the Lexapro antidepressant prescription for 1 year or longer.

The recommended dose for Escitaloptam tablets or oral solution is 10 mg once a day. If necessary, the doctor may increase the dose to 20 mg after a minimum of 1 week, but the higher dose is not recommended for most older adults and people with liver problems.

How to take

  • Do NOT take the drug if you are taking or have taken a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) (eg, phenelzine), selegiline, or St. John's wort within the last 14 days.
  • Do NOT take more than the recommended dose, change your dose, or use Escitalopram for longer than prescribed without checking with your doctor.
  • Lexapro may be taken without regard to food.
  • Don't stop taking Lexapro abruptly. Abrupt cessation of therapy may cause withdrawal symptoms such as mood problems, lethargy, insomnia, and tingling sensations. Onset of these symptoms usually occurs within a week of discontinuation or dose reduction and symptoms may last from a few days to 3 weeks.

If your depression symptoms don't improve after 4-6 weeks of Lexapro therapy the doctor may switch you to another prescription antidepressant. Or you may try one of the non-prescription treatments such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), acupuncture, or massage.
