Detailed Information
Levitra is a prescription medication used to treat erectile dysfunction
(impotence). This drug has been shown to be effective in men over
the age of 18 years who have erectile dysfunction, including men
with diabetes or who have undergone prostatectomy.
Levitra causes erections only during sexual excitement. It does
not work in the absence of arousal and does not increase sexual
desire.
Levitra provides a slight improvement to Viagra. It can be taken
with food, only takes 25-30 minutes to take effect, and lasts up
to five hours. Levitra has many of the same side effects as Viagra
(including vision changes), but with a lower incident rate.
How to take
- Levitra (Vardenafil), when used in conjunction with nitrates,
may cause severe hypotension, myocardial infarction, and possibly
death. PDE-5 inhibitors should be absolutely avoided in conjunction
with nitrates.
- Do not take Levitra with certain blood pressure and prostate
drugs known as alpha-blockers, including Cardura (doxazosin),
Flomax (tamsulosin), Hytrin (terazosin), Minipress (prazosin),
and Uroxatral (alfuzosin).
- May be taken without regard to meals.
Levitra dosage
Doses range from 5 mg to 20 mg, depending on the drug's effect.
The recommended starting dose is 10 mg for most people. However,
if you're 65 or older, the doctor may start you at 5 mg. Take Levitra
approximately 60 min prior to sexual activity. The manufacturer
recommends a maximum of one dose per day. However, your doctor may
need to lower the dose if you're taking certain drugs that affect
the liver, including erythromycin, indinavir (Crixivan), itraconazole
(Sporanox), ketoconazole (Nizoral), and ritonavir (Norvir). If you
have moderate liver impairment, the recommended starting dose is
5 mg, not to exceed a daily dose of 10 mg.

- Vardenafil was initially developed and manufactured by Bayer
Pharmaceuticals. Later, Bayer joined with GSK to market the drug
jointly. Vardenafil was co-marketed by Bayer and GSK under the
trade name Levitra. As of 2005, the co-promotion rights of GSK
on this drug have been "transferred back" to Bayer in many markets
outside of the United States. In Italy, Bayer markets the product
as Levitra and GSK markets the product as Vivanza.
- Levitra is very selective in attacking PDE-5 without affecting
other isoenzymes. This allows a smaller dose of Levitra to have
the same effect as a larger dose of Viagra. It's average dose
is 10 mg while an average Viagra dose is 50mg.
- Levitra is faster-cting, reaching maximum concentration in
30 to 40 minutes, with the effects lasting about 16 hours.
