Minocycline Medical Uses:

Minocycline is a tetracycline antibiotic. Minocycline is used to treat skin infections, urinary tract infections, gallbladder infections, protozoal infections, respiratory tract infections such as bronchitis, pneumonia, and sinusitis.

Minocycline Dosage, How to Take:

  • Dosage for bacterial or protozoal infections (adults and teenagers): 200 mg at first, then 100 mg every twelve hours; or 100 to 200 mg at first, then 50 mg every six hours.
  • Dosage for children older than 8 years of age: Dose is based on body weight. The usual dose is 4 mg per kilogram (kg) (1.8 mg per pound) of body weight at first, then 2 mg per kg (0.9 mg per pound) of body weight every twelve hours.
  • Infants and children 8 years of age and younger: Tetracyclines are usually not used in young children because tetracyclines can permanently stain teeth.

Possible Side Effects:

Like all medicines, Minocycline may cause unwanted effects (side effects) in some people.

Tell your doctor if any of these symptoms continue or are bothersome:

  • increased sensitivity of the skin to sunlight

This medicine can cause the skin to react abnormally to direct sunlight and UV light, causing an exagerated sunburn reaction. Avoid exposing your skin to direct sunlight and UV light while taking this medicine. This sunlight sensitivity can continue for two weeks to several months after stopping Minocycline.

Minocycline is not generally approved for treating patients under 8 years old.

Do not take any Minocycline after the expiration date printed on the bottle. Expired Minocycline can cause a dangerous syndrome resulting in damage to the kidneys.

Pregnancy & Breast Feeding:

Pregnancy Category D. Minocycline, like other tetracycline-class antibiotics, crosses the placenta and may cause fetal harm when administered to a pregnant woman. Rare spontaneous reports of congenital anomalies including limb reduction have been reported in post-marketing experience. Only limited information is available regarding these reports; therefore, no conclusion on causal association can be established. If Minocycline is used during pregnancy or if the patient becomes pregnant while taking this drug, the patient should be apprised of the potential hazard to the fetus.

Tetracyclines are excreted in human milk. Because of the potential for serious adverse reactions in nursing infants from the tetracyclines, a decision should be made whether to discontinue nursing or discontinue the drug, taking into account the importance of the drug to the mother.
