Metronidazole Medical Uses:
Metronidazole is an antibacterial drug. It is used to kill any bacteria
in the body that are causing infection. It is used for a wide variety
of infections including those in the adbomen, bones, joints, nervous
system, respiratory tract, skin, as well as vaginal and intestinal infections.
Metronidazole Dosage:
Metronidazole is taken orally in tablet form. It is important to maintain
a constant level of Metronidazole in the blood. Therefore, it must be
taken at regular intervals without missing any doses. Take Metronidazole
with 8 ounces of water (one glass)
- For acute intestinal amebiasis (acute amebic dysentery): 750 mg
orally three times daily for 5 to 10 days.
- For amebic liver abscess: 500 mg or 750 mg orally three times daily
for 5 to 10 days.
Possible Side Effects:
The most common adverse reactions:
- nausea
- headache
- anorexia
- vomiting
- diarrhea
- epigastric distress
- abdominal cramping
- constipation
- dark urine (harmless)
- metallic taste
Serious side effects:
- convulsive seizures
- peripheral neuropathy
You should also tell your doctor if you experience any unwanted effects
which are not mentioned above.
Metronidazole Precautions:
- Metronidazole has been shown to be carcinogenic in mice and rats.
Unnecessary use of the drug should be avoided. There is inadequate
evidence for the carcinogenicity of metronidazole in humans.
Pregnancy & Breast Feeding:

pregnancy because of concerns about its mutagenicity.
This medicine passes into breast milk. It should be used with caution
in breastfeeding mothers and only if the expected benefit to the mother
is greater than any possible risk to the nursing infant. High dosage
regimens should be avoided unless the mother stops breastfeeding during
the course.
Drug Interactions:
Metronidazole may interact with the following drugs:
- barbiturates (phenobarbital) decrease the blood level of metronidazole
and may make it less effective at treating infection
- warfarin - bleeding may occur if metronidazole and warfarin are
used together
- phenytoin may cause dangerous side effects when taken with metronidazole
- lithium - may cause dangerous side effects when taken with metronidazole
- cyclosporin
Possible interactions with other substances:
- Alcohol. Co-administration of metronidazole and alcohol results,
rarely, in a disulfiram-like reaction (nausea, vomiting, flushing,
tachycardia). Consumption of alcohol should be avoided during systemic
metronidazole therapy and for at least 24 hours after completion of
treatment.
