It is sometimes used in conjunction with other blood pressure pills to treat high blood pressure. It also may be used for the reatment of hyperkalemia.

Lasix Dosage:

  • Edema: 20 to 600 mg daily; depending on the severity.
  • Hypertension: 40 to 80 mg daily.
  • Chronic renal insufficiency: 250 mg (increased every 4 hours to a total dose of up to 2 g in 24 hours).

Possible Side Effects:

Lasix (furosemide) can cause the following adverse reactions:

  • Gastrointestinal: pancreatitis, jaundice, anorexia, oral and gastric irritation, cramping, diarrhea, constipation, nausea, vomiting
  • Hypersensitivity reactions: systemic vasculitis, interstitial nephritis, necrotizing angiitis
  • CSN reactions: tinnitus and hearing loss, paresthesias, vertigo, dizziness, headache, blurred vision, xanthopsia
  • Hematologic reactions: aplastic anemia (rare), thrombocytopenia, agranulocytosis (rare), hemolytic anemia, leukopenia, anemia

  • Cases of tinnitus and reversible or irreversible hearing impairment have been reported.

Pregnancy & Breast Feeding:

Pregnancy Category C . Furosemide has been shown to cause unexplained maternal deaths and abortions in rabbits at 2, 4 and 8 times the maximal recommended human oral dose. There are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. Furosemide should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus.

Because it appears in breast milk, caution should be exercised when Furosemide is administered to a nursing mother.

Drug Interactions:

Lasix may interact with the following drugs:

  • aminoglycoside antibiotics - frusemide can enhance the ototoxic effects of this class of antibiotics
  • ethacrynic acid - possibility of ototoxicity
  • lithium - diuretics reduce lithium's renal clearance and add a high risk of lithium toxicity
  • NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) -can decrease the diuretic effects of furosemide
  • phenytoin - can decrease the absorption and effectiveness of furosemide
  • cephalosporin antibiotics - frusemide may enhance the nephrotoxic effects of this class of antibiotic
  • antihypertensive drugs - frusemide enhances the hypotensive effects of antihypertensives; particularly in combination with ACE inhibitors such as captopril
  • digoxin - frusemide may deplete potassium to a low level where the sensitivity of the myocardium is increased and digoxin toxicity may occur
