Brand Name: Biaxin
Generic Name: Clarithromycin
The following product information is not a substitute for physician's
or manufacturer's instructions.
Clarithromycin Medical Uses:
Clarithromycin belongs to the group of medicines called macrolide antibiotics.
Clarithromycin is used to treat infections caused by bacteria, such as
bronchitis, pneumonia, and infections of the ears, lungs, sinuses, skin,
and throat.
How to Take:
Take Clarithromycin exactly as prescribed. Take the tablets with a full
glass of water. You may take clarithromycin regular-release tablets with
or without food. Taking clarithromycin with food may reduce stomach upset.
Take your doses at regular intervals. Do not take your medicine more often
than directed. Be sure to take the full amount of Clarithromycin that
your doctor has prescribed, even if you begin to feel better. If you stop
taking your antibiotic too soon, you may allow some bacteria to survive
and cause the infection to return or the bacteria to develop resistance.
Possible Side Effects:
Like all medicines, Clarithromycin may cause unwanted effects (side effects)
in some people.
Tell your doctor if any of these symptoms continue or are bothersome:
- stomach discomfort, upset, or pain
- mild diarrhea
- nausea
- change in sensation of taste
- dizziness, or headache
The following side effects are rare, but you should contact your doctor
immediately if any of them happen to you:
- difficulty breathing
- swelling of tongue or throat
- skin rash, itching
- redness, blistering, peeling or loosening of the skin, including inside
the mouth
- severe or watery diarrhea
- yellow color of eyes, skin, or urine

- severe abdominal or stomach cramps
You should also tell your doctor if you experience any unwanted effects
which are not mentioned above.
Clarithromycin Precautions:
Before taking Clarithromycin, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have
any of these conditions:
- allergic reaction to Clarithromycin, other macrolide antibiotics
(such as erythromycin), other foods
- kidney disease
- liver disease
- irregular heart beat or abnormal heart beat
If you get severe or watery diarrhea, do not treat yourself. Consult
your doctor before taking an antidiarrhea medication.
Pregnancy & Breast Feeding:
Pregnancy Category C. It is not known whether clarithromycin will harm
an unborn baby. Do not take this medication without first talking to your
doctor if you are pregnant or could become pregnant during treatment.
