Celexa medical uses:
Celexa (citalopram) is in a class of drugs known as selective serotonin
reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs. Celexa is used to treat depression. This
medication also is used to treat certain eating disorders (e.g., anorexia
nervosa, bulimia). Citalopram affects chemicals in the brain that may
become unbalanced and cause depression.
How to use Celexa:
Take this medication exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Dosage is adjusted
based on age, response to treatment and other medical conditions. Celexa
is usually taken once daily and may be taken with or without food. Take
the dose at the same time each day. Do not exceed the recommended dose
or take this drug for longer than prescribed. Continue to take Celexa
even if you feel better. Do not stop taking this drug without consulting
your doctor. It may take up to several weeks before the full benefit of
this medication takes effect.
Celexa possible side effects:
If any of the following side effects persist, or worsen or do not go away
with time, contact your doctor: diarrhea, nausea, upset stomach, weakness,
drowsiness, trouble sleeping, anxiety, nightmares, dry mouth, frequent
urination, difficulty urinating, constipation, blurred vision, changes
in sex drive or ability excessive, sweating. If you experience any of
the following serious side effects, stop taking Celexa and call your doctor
immediately: an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing or swallowing
, closing of the throat, swelling of the lipsor face, severe skin rash,
hives); high blood pressure (severe headache, blurred vision); low blood
pressure (dizziness, weakness); irregular heartbeat or pulse; jaw, neck,
and back muscle spasms; shuffling walk; fever; slow or difficult speech;
yellowing of the skin or eyes; weight changes; taste changes; changes
in menstrual period; painful and/or prolonged erection. Contact your doctor
if you notice other side effects not listed here.
Celexa precautions:
Before taking Celexa tell your doctor if you have an allergy to citalopram
or have had an allergy or other adverse effects during therapy with other
SSRIs. Tell your doctor your medical history: liver problems, kidney problems,
heart problems, other mental/mood disorders, history of seizures, impaired
cognitive/motor performance. Do not take Celexa without first talking
to your doctor if you are pregnant or are breast-feeding. Discuss the
risks and benefits with your doctor. Do not take this medicine if you
have taken during the last 2 weeks a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI)
(isocarboxazid (Marplan), phenelzine (Nardil), tranylcypromine (Parnate)).
Tell your doctor what prescription and nonprescription medications you
are taking, especially fluconazole, erythromycin, ketoconazole, itraconazole,
cimetidine (Tagamet), lithium, carbamazepine. Celexa should not be taken
during treatment with escitalopram (Lexapro). This medication may make
you dizzy or drowsy , therefore use caution engaging in activities requiring
alertness such as driving or operating machinery. Alcohol may increase
drowsiness and dizziness while taking Celexa or affect your condition.
Caution is advised when this drug is used in the elderly, because they
may be more sensitive to the side effects of this product.
Drug interations:
Drug interactions can result in unwanted side effects or prevent a medicine
from doing its job. The best way to avoid harmful interactions is to tell
your doctor or pharmacist what medications you are currently taking.
Do not take Celexa if you have taken within the last 2 weeks a monoamine
oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) (isocarboxazid (Marplan), phenelzine (Nardil),
or tranylcypromine (Parnate)). Celexa may interact with the following
medications: tricyclic
antidepressants (amitriptyline (Elavil), imipramine (Tofranil), nortriptyline
(Pamelor)); other antidepressants (fluoxetine (Prozac), fluvoxamine (Luvox),
sertraline (Zoloft), paroxetine (Paxil), nefazodone (Serzone)); seizure
medication (carbamazepine (Tegretol), felbamate (Felbatol)); weight loss
drugs ( sibutramine, dexfenfluramine); stomach medicine (cimetidine (Tagamet,
Tagamet HB), ranitidine (Zantac), omeprazole (Prilosec)); asthma medication
(zafirlukast (Accolate)); narcotic pain relievers (codeine); antifungal
medication (fluconazole (Diflucan), itraconazole (Sporanox), ketoconazole
(Nizoral)); antibiotics (erythromycin (E-Mycin, E.E.S., Erythrocin, P.C.E.,
others), clarithromycin (Biaxin)); migraine medications (almotriptan (Axert),
eletriptan (Relpax), frovatriptan (Frova), naratriptan (Amerge), sumatriptan
(Imitrex), zolmitriptan (Zomig)); anti-anxiety drugs (diazepam); lithium;
antihistamines (diphenhydramine) , and others.
Overdose:
If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or
emergency room immediately. Symptoms of a Celexa overdose include nausea,
vomiting, drowsiness, dizziness, tremor, sweating, irregular heartbeat.
Missed dose:
If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you remember. However, if it is
almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue your
regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed
one.
Storage:
Store at room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees
C) away from light and moisture. Keep this and all medications out of
the reach of children.
