Bupropion hydrochloride (also known as amfebutamone) is an antidepressant, selective norepinephrine and dopamine reuptake inhibitor. This medication is used to treat depression. Under the name Zyban it is sold as a smoking cessation aid.

Some doctors prescribe Bupropion "off-label" for weight loss, bipolar depression ADD/ADHD, SSRI-induced sexual dysfunction, chronic fatigue syndrom, headaches and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

Bupropion HCl regulates certain brain chemicals - dopamine and norepinephrine - to elevate mood. It is believed that depression is caused by chemical imbalances in the brain. Controlling these chemical imbalances will help improve depressive symptoms. This drug is also used to help people quit smoking.

How to take

• Follow the instructions on your prescription label. The sustained-release form (Wellbutrin SR or Zyban) is usually taken in 2 doses, at least 8 hours apart.
• Your doctor will probably start you at a low dosage and gradually increase it; this helps minimize side effects.
• Do not drink alcohol while you are taking Bupropion; an interaction with alcohol could increase the possibility of a seizure.
• Do not stop taking Bupropion without talking to your doctor. You may have withdrawal side effects if you stop antidepressant suddenly.

Prescription dosage

The usual starting dose is 150 mg in the morning. After 3 days, if you do well, your doctor will have you take another 150 mg at least 8 hours after the first dose. It may be 4 weeks before you feel the benefit and you will take the drug for several months. The maximum recommended dose is 400 mg a day, taken in doses of 200 mg each.

If you have severe cirrhosis of the liver, your dosage should be no more than 75 mg once a day. With less serious liver and kidney problems, the dosage will be reduced as needed.
