Brand Name Wellbutrin, Wellbutrin SR, Wellbutrin XL

The following product information is not a substitute for physician's or manufacturer's instructions.

Bupropion uses:
This medication is used to treat depression. Bupropion regulates certain brain chemicals--dopamine and norepinephrine--to elevate mood. It is believed that depression is caused by chemical imbalances in the brain. Controlling these chemical imbalances will help improve depressive symptoms. Bupropion is also used to help people quit smoking.

Contraindications:
Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to any ingredient in this medicine, you have seizures, you are taking any other medication containing Bupropion, you have or have a history of an eating disorder, such as anorexia or bulimia or you are currently taking or have taken a monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitor within the last 14 days.

How to use Bupropion:
Take Bupropion exactly as prescribed by your doctor. If you have any questions about the amount or frequency of the medicine you are taking, consult with your health care provider. It is usually taken one to three times a day and may be taken with or without food. Since Bupropion may cause sleeplessness, avoid taking this medicine close to bedtime. Bupropion can be habit forming. Never take a larger dose, take it more often, or for a longer period than prescribed. Maximum doses of Bupropion are as follows: no single dose of the regular-release product Bupropion should be more than 150 mg, and doses should be taken at least 6 hours apart with a maximum daily dose of 450 mg; single doses of the sustained-release product Wellbutrin SR should not exceed 200 mg and should be taken at least 8 hours apart with a maximum daily dose of 400 mg. Continue to take the medicine even if you feel better. Do not stop taking Bupropion without notifying your doctor. Bupropion must be taken regularly for a few weeks before its full effect is felt.

Bupropion possible side effects:
Every medicine may cause side effects. Bupropion is generally well tolerated. Notify your doctor if any of the following side effects from Bupropion are severe or do not go away: dry mouth, headache, increased sweating, nausea, vomiting, constipation, anxiety, insomnia, trouble sleeping, frequent urination, difficulty urinating, fatigue and blurred vision, change in appetite or weight. If you experience any of the following uncommon but serious symptoms, call your doctor immediately: allergic reaction (difficulty breathing, rash, itching), seizures or tremors, fast or irregular heartbeat, loss of coordination, dizziness, fainting, mood changes, slowed movements, yellowing of the eyes or skin. If you notice other side effects not listed here, contact your doctor.

Bupropion precautions:
Before using Bupropion, tell your doctor if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine (anticoagulants, antihistamines, antipsychotics, carbamazepine, insulin, levodopa, lithium, MAO inhibitors, medication for high blood pressure, seizures or allergies, methylphenidate, oral antidiabetic medications, tranquilizers). Tell your doctor if you have a history of seizures; of head trauma. Tell your doctor if you have liver disease, impaired kidney function, diabetes. Tell your doctor if you consume large amounts of alcohol or have a history of substance abuse. Tell your doctor if you are using nicotine patches. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Bupropion may cause seizures when taken in large doses. Because of the risk of seizures, do not use this medication in combination with any other drug containing Bupropion. If a seizure occurs while taking this medicine, stop using Bupropion and contact your doctor immediately. You should know that this medicine may cause dizziness, drowsiness and may affect coordination, so use caution while driving or performing other tasks requiring alertness or physical dexterity. Remember that alcohol can increase the risk of seizures and add to the drowsiness caused by this medication. Limit or avoid consumption of alcoholic beverages while taking Bupropion. Elderly patients may be more sensitive to the effects of Bupropion. Stop taking MAO inhibitors at least 14 days before taking Bupropion.

Bupropion drug interactions:
The best way to avoid harmful interactions is to tell your doctor or pharmacist what nonprescription and prescription medications you are currently taking. Many drugs can interact with Bupropion, resulting in side effects or decreased effectiveness of the medicine. Excess caffeine intake can increase the chance of seizures with Bupropion. Check all nonprescription/prescription drug labels for caffeine. Do not start or stop any medication without doctor approval.

Overdose:
Contact your doctor or pharmacist immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include seizures, hallucinations, rapid heart rate, and loss of consciousness.

Missed dose:
Take any missed dose as soon as possible but not if it is within 4 hours of the next dose. If it is time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular schedule. Do not "double-up" the dose. If more than one dose is missed, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

Storage:
Store at room temperature and keep away from moisture and sunlight. Do not store in the bathroom.
