As Acyclovir may cause an upset stomach, take it with food or milk. Do not miss any doses. Continue to take the drug even if you feel well, because your symptoms may start to improve before the infection is completely treated. Do not stop taking acyclovir without talking to your doctor.

Acyclovir Possible Side Effects:
Possible side effects, that may go away during treatment, include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, dizziness. Stop taking Acyclovir and call your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following serious side effects: an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; severe rash, severe itching); little or no urine production. If you notice other effects not listed in this instruction, contact your doctor.

Acyclovir Precautions:
Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding. Do not take this medication without first talking to your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby. Before taking this medication, tell your doctor if you have kidney disease.

Drug Interactions:
Drug interactions can result in unwanted side effects or prevent a medicine from doing its job. Probenecid (Benemid) may increase the effects of Acyclovir and lead to dangerous side effects. Talk to your doctor and/or pharmacist before taking any prescription or over-the-counter medicines, including herbal products. Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.

Missed Dose:
If you miss a dose of this medicine, take the dose as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next regularly scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and take only your next regularly scheduled dose. Do not take a double dose.

Herpes infections are contagious and you can infect other people, even during treatment. Avoid letting infected areas come into contact with other people.
